Simton IPF73 is a popular model of Simton IP phones. Just as many other IP phones, there are two methods to configure the IP phone. One method is through the function keypad and the little screen on the IP phone. Another method is through web browser to access the IP phone’s GUI interface. Here are only some highlights related to the configuration of Simton IPF73 IP phones.
1. First, you need to login Simton IPX and to create some IP extensions (i.e. the SIP client accounts for IP phones) in the IPX configuration management page of “Basic Voice > Extensions > IP Extensions”.
The extension number must be based on the IPX code and does not conflict with other type of extensions. The IP extension number is used as a user id or an account number when the IPX authenticates incoming registration requests from the IP phone.
2. You need to find out the IP address of IPF73. The IP phone can get its WAN port IP address via DHCP. You can also assign a proper IP address to the WAN port of IP phone using keypad command, MENU > Advanced > Next > Static Set. The default LAN port IP address is 192.168.10.1.
Once you know an IP address of the IP phone, you can use web browser to access its management interface, http://IP-address-of-IPF73/, and default username and password both are admin.
3. In the IP phone management page, you can go to VoIP to enable the register (1 or 2 SIP accounts) as in the following figure.

◇ Server address: This is the IPX address of either IPX WAN port or IPX LAN port, depending on how the IPF73 would access the IPX.
◇ Server Port: The server signaling port must be changed to 8060, which is the default VoIP signaling port number that the IPX uses.
◇ Account Name and Password must be the same as Extension number and Extension Deice Password configured in the IPX IP extension.
Phone Number and Display name are suggested to be the same with the extension number.
After checking Enable Register, the IPF73 should be able to successfully register with the IPX.
4. Go back to Basic, here you can review the configuration and status information.

In the codec priority settings ( PHONE> DSP), it is better to have the order 729, 711u, and 711a.
Useful Features of IPF73 IP Phone
IPF73 IP phones support multiple VoIP lines. You can switch between lines during conversations to implement call holding and conference calls on the IP phone. The IPX can send multiple call requests to the IP phone using the same IPX extension number.
When see Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) lights up, dial *77# to access your voice mailbox.
How to Configure Secured Communications between IPF73 and IPX
The IPF73 is able to encrypt VoIP signaling data so that communions between the IP phone and the IPX are secured. When encryption is used, the IPF73 can register to the IPX from a remote location over the Internet even in a country where VoIP is blocked.
To enable the feature of secured VoIP communication, you need to configure a security key in the IP extension section (Basic Voice > Extensions > IP Extensions) in the IPX as in the following diagram:

The RC4 encryption key can be any number of characters. Note that IPX actually can accept both encrypted registration and clear text registration. If it is an encrypted registration, it must be RC4 encryption with the same key.
In the IPF73 configuration, you click on Advanced Set in the SIP account configuration page; you will be able to configure some encryption parameters as in the following diagram:

You need to set “Server Type” to be Simton; Signal Key to the same as configured in the IPX IP extension, e.g. abcd12345 in the diagram; Signal Encode to be checked. Other fields can be left as they were.
You will need to save the configuration and reboot the IPF73 to make the new settings effective.
